General Course Maintenance

Golf Course Manager/Superintendent: John Newton, C.G.C.S. 291-6864

Iowa State University has one of the best Turf Grass Management programs in the country. Many of Veenker's student employees go on to find jobs at some of the finest golf facilities in the world. We are fortunate to be able to employ students who are actually gaining knowledge through their part-time work that will help them to build a strong foundation for their future profession.

Typical maintenance schedule during the regular season

  • Daily: mow greens, cut cups, set tees, groom bunkers
  • 3 times a week: Mow tees, collars and fairways
  • Continual Rough mowing
  • Top-dress greens: every 10 days or so as needed

Aerification Schedule

  • Greens: once in the spring, once in the fall
  • Tees: 2 or 3 times throughout the season as needed
  • Fairways and Collars: fall
  • Rough and open areas - fall

In order to maintain and improve the quality of the golf course, the above may change as course conditions and growing seasons dictate.

Fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, insecticides and growth regulation products are periodically applied to the golf course as determined necessary by the superintendent. As often as possible, applications are made in the evenings and overnight to reduce contact with players and decrease interruptions of play.
