Veenker Memorial Golf Course (VMGC) is a premier public golf facility owned and operated by Iowa State University under the department of Specialty Business Services and Cultural Arts. VMGC officially opened for play on May 12, 1938. The vision of George F. Veenker, former ISU athletic director and football coach and ISU President Raymond Hughes can be credited for bringing a golf course to the ISU campus. Mr. Veenker envisioned, and set in motion, a course to be built by the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Works Progress Administration so that the need for public funds were minimal for the construction of the course. Originally, a Perry Maxwell design, VMGC has since become one of the most talked about, demanding, challenging and fun-to-play golf courses in the Midwest. VMGC offers a full range of golfing activities for the enjoyment and benefit of Iowa State students, faculty, staff, friends of Iowa State and the City of Ames.
